UCC celebrates George Boole’s 200th Birthday

The 2nd November 2015 marks the 200th birthday of the iconic Mathematician George Boole and University College Cork are celebrating the landmark in style.

For the day that’s in it, Google’s Doodle is also celebrating George Boole’s 200th Birthday by showcasing the mathematician’s genius on the search engine’s homepage in a colourful and clever presentation.

Celebrations on George Boole’s life have been ongoing all year, with UCC, in particular, going out of its way to remember the genius’ work.

Boole moved to Cork in 1849, having been appointed as the first Professor of Maths at UCC, with his binary ‘Boolean’ system revolutionising how logical mathamatics was approached, and greatly influencing the development of engineering and, ultimately, computer science.

Boole’s work underpinned today’s information age, laying the foundations upon which most of the technology we use today is based.0.

American Claude Shannon applied this Boolean logic to the electrical circuits in the 1930s, directly leading to modern computers.

As one of Cork’s leading hotels near UCC, the staff at The Kingsley wish everyone in University College Cork a great day of celebrations and of course Happy Birthday to George Boole!
